Whole Foods To Require GMO Labels On Food
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Health food grocery chain Whole Foods Market has pledged to label all Genetically Modified foods by 2018.
The chain announced Friday that the change would take place over the next several years.
"Whole Foods Market commits to full GMO transparency by giving supplier partners five years to source non-GMO ingredients or to clearly label products with ingredients containing GMOs," Whole Foods's President A.C Gallo said on the store's website.
Genetically Modified foods are made by using genetically modified organisms -- or GMOs. Those foods contain plant products such as soybean, corn, flax and sugar beet that have been modified in order for faster growth of crops and to make crops resistant to certain pests, according to the FDA.
Whole Foods, which has two Pittsburgh locations in Wexford and East Liberty has already been submitting their own private-label food brand to be verified as non GMO.
