Allegheny County Bomb Squad investigating possible explosion inside a vehicle in Whitehall
WHITEHALL, Pa. (KDKA) -- Police in Whitehall are investigating a possible car explosion from Sunday morning.
Neighbors told KDKA-TV that they heard a loud bang early in the morning, sometime after 6 a.m.
"[I was] sleeping in the middle of a night and just a big boom at 6:10 in the morning," a woman, who did not want to be identified, told KDKA-TV on Sunday.
"It was louder than normal," Bob Kauer of Whitehall said.
Whitehall police and fire were called to the 4400 block of East Barlind Drive sometime after 6:10 a.m. Sunday. They responded to calls of a "loud bang" and smoke in the area.
"Grandkid woke up and thought he was having a bad dream, and here it was just the boom of whatever was going on up the street," the unidentified woman said.
Up the street was a damaged blue Toyota SUV. Police say it appears that an explosion might have happened inside.
"I've heard explosions from what I remember 50 years ago," Kauer said.
"I didn't know what it was, so we just went back to sleep," the unidentified woman said.
Police say no one was in the SUV and no one was injured either. Later, KDKA-TV saw crews removing a myriad of things from the car.
"I was leaving this morning, looked up the street," Bob Young of Whitehall said. "[You] just see fire trucks, police everywhere."
The Allegheny County Bomb Squad and county fire marshal were called to assist. Police say it was out of an abundance of caution. Neighbors call the whole situation unconventional.
"[It's] just kind of different for here," Young said. "You know, it's generally very quiet."
Police are still trying to determine whether this was intentional or an accident.
Officials continue to stress that there is no current threat to the community.
