White Oak Hit By Unusual Number Of Burglaries
WHITE OAK (KDKA) – They break in through area kitchen windows, back doors, bedroom windows – all when left unlocked.
Summit Street is just one neighborhood where burglars and robbers have been busy in White Oak.
"The main thing is my own safety," one woman said.
Asking not to be identified, the woman says her neighbor across the street was robbed in the early morning hours while she slept.
"She's an elderly lady and she was very upset about the whole thing," she said. "And she kept saying, 'The thought that someone came into my house, invaded my privacy.'"
Over a month, since Sept. 11, there have been eight break-ins, including:
- Two on Summit Street
- Two on Amherst Street
- Two on Glass Street
- One on Fawcett Avenue
- One on Ohio Avenue
Jewelry, cash and a firearm have all been taken.
There have been reports of two young black men 16 to 22 years old knocking on doors – and when answered, asking about a lost dog.
"He went and he looked in one of the windows, jumped over the fence, looked in the other window," said neighbor Arnold Eisenberg. "Most everybody's got dogs – and everyone watches out for everybody else."
Police have sent latent fingerprints to the crime lab – and one home had surveillance video.
Patrols are making rounds two-to-three times a day.
One man told KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson that he's not worried because he'll, "shoot anybody who tries to break into his home," but declined to say more.
