W. Va. Sergeant Killed In Line Of Duty

PERRY (KDKA) - A West Virginia sheriff's sergeant was killed when a hit-and-run suspect crashed into his patrol car in Greene County early Saturday morning.

According to police, Jerod Green, 35, of Morgantown, crashed into the sergeant's car along Interstate 79 in Perry around 1:40 a.m.

The incident began with officers pulling over a hit-and-run suspect around 1:09 a.m. on Route 100.

As deputies approached the vehicle, they noticed that Green appeared to be intoxicated. He refused to exit the vehicle and took off, which initiated a chase.

Green crossed into Pennsylvania on Route 19, turned east and got on Interstate 79 south.

At that time, Green crashed into Sgt. Michael May's vehicle and was taken into custody. Results of a blood-alcohol test are still pending.

May, 41, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was a 10-year veteran of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.
