Weather Puts Damper On Route 28 Work

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Mother nature is not playing fair with the contractor trying to get the new southbound lanes of Route 28 open as planned.

Paving and wet weather do not mix and there has been more than enough wet weather this week to play havoc with the contractor's schedule.

PennDot had hoped to begin the transition work to the new southbound lanes in Millvale at 8 p.m. Friday. The connections between the two ends of the project to Route 28 still have to be paved and lines have to be painted so drivers can understand the new traffic pattern.

"We're confident looking at the forecast that we'll find a window in there to get it achieved, it may not be tonight but we're hopeful it will be,"  said PennDot District 11 Spokesman Jim Struzzi.

The lanes are supposed to open around 5 p.m. Saturday, but the schedule has some flexibility.

In all, the contractor will need about 20 dry hours to get the work done. They will be pushing back the schedule as the weather dictates and feel they will be able to have the new lanes open by Monday morning's rush hour.
