We Are Family: Pirates Unveil New 1979 Throwback Jerseys
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are going old school in 2016, unveiling new throwback inspired 1979 jerseys.
A twitter post last month first eluded to the new jerseys and the Pirates confirmed it Thursday.
The team says the retro jerseys will become the team's new Sunday alternate uniform in 2016.
The uniform is a replica of the iconic 1979 World Champion Pirates uniform. The uniform will be completed with a Pirates pillbox cap, designed with
three gold stripes and the classic Pirates gold "P."
Pirates players are seen taking part in a photo shoot wearing the new 1979 inspired jerseys.
In a press release the Pirates said: "The 1979 uniforms have always been widely popular with our fans and we believe this is the right complement to our existing uniform collection," said Pirates President Frank Coonelly. "Every season we strive for ways to pay tribute to the great teams of our past. This is a unique opportunity for the organization to recognize the 1979 World Series Champions."
