Water Service Restored In Oakland After Pipe Breaks

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A busy intersection was shut down, crews were scrambling to make repairs and the only water flowing was from the pumps extracting water from the massive hole.

An old 12-inch pipe burst late Sunday night in Oakland. The water punched through the asphalt and tore a destructive path down Dithridge.

The concrete buckled under the pressure.

"A lot of damage," said Webster Hall building manager, Kathy Painter. "All through the tables here I think we're gonna have to have the tables lifted. All this cement work. There's cracks in our building."

And that building, Webster Hall, had no water for much of the day.

When the new section of pipe arrived, there was some relief, but many other repairs still lie ahead.

"Yeah, it's gonna be whenever it gets restored, we got to bleed air out of the system and -- work to do once we get back on line," said Larry Hey, a maintenance technician.

The repairs did not take as long as originally anticipated. Water service to the building will be restored sooner than they thought.
