Water Main Break Floods Banksville Plaza
BANKSVILLE (KDKA) – A broken six-inch water pipe caused four-and-a-half feet of water to flood the Kuhn's grocery store loading dock on Banksville Road early Monday morning.
Andy Nogy who works at the Kuhn's said, "It was about 5:40 a.m. I was coming out of the dairy cooler. I talked to another person he thought it might be a pipe broke in the loading dock. He came in, opened up the bay doors and a title wave of water rushed in."
Pittsburgh firefighters shut off the valve and the water started to recede, but not before inches of water seeped into numerous businesses forcing many to shut their doors for the day.
Joe Dentici, President of Kuhn's, was on scene this morning thanking store employees for their quick reaction and for helping with cleanup inside the store.
When asked what he think caused the water main to break he said, "old pipes, it's the city. The building's been here since 1958 and things corrode."
Dentici said the health department has to come in and inspect the store before it can open its doors. He says he expected to be open by noon on Monday.
Officials from the Pennsylvania Water Company say they plan to have water restored to the entire Banksville Plaza by dinner time.
