Walmart Vs. Amazon: Same Day Delivery
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) --- With Christmas holiday shopping on-line threatening to take business away from stores like Walmart, maybe it's no surprise that Walmart is following in the steps of Amazon by promising same-day delivery of certain products ordered on-line.
"I think it's good, especially if you have a small car and you're going to get something big that won't fit in your car," says Michelle Easley of Coraopolis.
It's called Walmart to Go, and Walmart is test marketing the idea in four cities, although not yet in Pittsburgh.
The idea is pretty simple. Customers go on Walmart's website, order their merchandise -- like toys, electronics, and sporting goods -- and then Walmart will deliver it to your home the very same day.
There are some requirements -- like customers have to go on-line before noon on that day -- and there's a ten dollar delivery charge but for an unlimited number of items with no minimum purchase.
"I think it would be good for an elderly couple, but for younger people I don't think they'd spend the money . . . but might save them some time," notes Don Conti of Moon.
But saving time is key for many busy shoppers -- especially during the holidays -- and Walmart with more than 4,000 stores from which to deliver thinks it can do that faster and more reliably than Amazon which has only 40 distribution centers.
Some local shoppers hope this comes to Pittsburgh soon.
"That would be nice, especially with Christmas around the corner, to get your stuff sent to you. It's worth ten bucks," says Easley.
But not everyone is convinced.
"I'd rather pick out my own. I'd rather see what I'm getting," says Wayne Rees of Robinson.
