Walmart To Sell Anti-Aging Makeup For Pre-Teens
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It hasn't hit the Walmart shelves yet, but the internet is exploding with a new product line called Geo Girls – a beauty line targeted to eight to 12-year-olds.
The line includes, lipstick, blush, mascara and face shimmer.
Dr. Anthony Mannarino is director of child and adolescent psychiatry at West Penn Allegheny.
"Is this just another way that we're asking our children to grow up much faster and earlier than is really best for them?" he said.
Mannarino worries that this could lead pre-teens to experiment when they shouldn't.
"Certainly an 8 or 9 or 10-year-old is not going to have the ability to date, or smoke, or any of the other things that teenagers might try," he said.
Dr. Justin Vujevich, a dermatologist, adds this medical caution.
"One of the concerns about applying a lot of makeup at that young age is the exposure to allergens," he said.
But Walmart touts its pre-teen makeup as all natural with anti-aging oxidants.
Dermatologists say it's unnecessary.
"Most pre-teens at that age probably don't need the antioxidants that they're claiming in these products," Dr. Vujevich said.
