Walmart Decides Not To Pursue McCandless Development
MCCANDLESS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- After much debate, controversy and legal red tape, Walmart will not be coming to the North Hills after all.
The decision was announced Wednesday afternoon through a statement from the company.
The statement from Walmart spokesman Phillip Keene reads in full:
"After much deliberation, we have decided not to pursue development of a new store in McCandless.
"We greatly appreciate the support we received from the community, and many others, as we worked through the legal and development process over the last several years.
"We are committed to serving customers in and around the Pittsburgh and Allegheny County area and look forward to continuing to innovate our services and invest in improving our existing stores throughout the state and region."
Early last week, the project looked to be moving forward after clearing legal challenges and moving onto the state regulatory process. Construction seemed imminent.
However, last Friday, Giant Eagle announced it had purchased a major chunk of the land for $1.3 million.
They released this statement following the announcement of the purchase.
"We were happy to be able to purchase newly available property along Blazier Drive in McCandless. We look forward to communicating with neighboring property owners and McCandless area reps to determine how we can best use the property to make a positive contribution to McCandless."
