Voter ID Bill And Immigration Hot Topics For Pa.
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Monday the Supreme Court rejected an Arizona law that requires voters to show proof of citizenship when they register to vote.
In a federal election, citizenship is required and on the form they must state under penalty of perjury that they are an American citizen.
Many states agree that this will reduce voter fraud, but civil rights groups believe it will discourage legal immigrants from voting. The challengers argue the law puts a burden on naturalized citizens to provide a document of naturalization for registration. Alabama, Georgia and Kansas support Arizona's law and are pushing the court to uphold the ID requirements.
Voter ID Bill Rejected in Arizona
Pennsylvania State Representative Daryl Metcalfe of Butler County joined Mike Pintek on NewsRadio 1020 KDKA to talk further on any impact this decision will have for Pennsylvania. He believes that the Supreme Court would have struck down anything that was above the federal law.
"We need this to prevent illegals from skewing or corrupting our legal system," said Daryl Metcalfe. "In Pennsylvania I believe that the court will vote the right way, the common sense way for our bill."
Metcalfe and Pintek continued their conversation and talked about the immigration bill that Pintek called, "an Amnesty Bill or a Needed Reform."
Metcalfe believes that the efforts of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and the other supporters are violating the trust of the American citizen by putting foreign interests first.
Immigration Bill is a Bad Idea
"It's the old game of bait and switch to trick the American people," said Metcalfe. "If we don't stop this bill it's going to cost American's millions of dollars so immigrants can use our benefits."
He concluded stating that if the government would just cut off and dry up their economic resources they will have no choice but to either join our country the right way or go home.
