Volunteers Join Together To Help Less Fortunate On Thanksgiving
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thanksgiving started bright and early this morning for dozens of volunteers at the Light of Life Rescue Mission on Pittsburgh's North Side.
Final preparations at the Mission, which annually provides a hot Thanksgiving dinner to the area's less fortunate, began around 5:30 a.m.
"To me, this is the best day of the year for me to work at Light of Life. I get to see people come here that would have been alone. People feel like it's the homeless that come here to eat, but on Thanksgiving, everybody comes," said Sue Shafer, of the Mission. "We get people who are just lonely, looking for a place come, people who might eat at churches throughout the year and they'll come here because the churches aren't serving.
They will be serving dinners from noon until 6 p.m. The menu includes turkey, gravy, potatoes, green beans, fruit, rolls and pies.
Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl also stopped by the Mission this afternoon to help serve up the food.
Light of Life Mission officials say they prepared up to 300 turkeys as well as hundreds of pies. They estimate that they will serve around 1,700 Thanksgiving meals today.
"We're going to serve about 1,000 of them here, and about 700 of them will go to high rises on the North Side," said Shafer. "We have volunteers coming in, taking dinners and serving them, and just spending time with the people there and really helping them enjoy their holiday."
Volunteers were also helping out the less fortunate today over at the Central Baptist Church on Wylie Avenue. They served up food from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in their fellowship hall.
