Volunteers Help To Set Up Breast Cancer Awareness Display
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Box after box was ripped open as volunteers carried bras by the armload. Each one was zip-tied onto two ribbons made of chicken wire as part of an impressive display for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"It's about two-and-a-half stories tall and we have probably about 2-3,000 bras that cover it," Marcie Eberhart, of American Eagle Outfitters, said.
The chicken wire, once fully covered in bras, will be placed on the display made by artist Steve Ford. It weighs around 2,000 pounds and is about 15 feet wide.
Aerie, part of the American Eagle brand, is behind the display and has made breast cancer awareness a mission of theirs - bearing the slogan this year, "support your girls."
"We partner with an organization called Bright Pink, which supports the prevention and early detection of breast cancer in young women and it's mainly a lot about education," Eberhart said.
It's not just about the display. Last year, Aerie raised $175,000 in just the month of October for this campaign. This year, as part of their effort, 100 percent of the sale of the Bright Pink bralette will go to the Bright Pink charity.
One of the proud participants volunteering Wednesday was Heather Durcho. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in March after she discovered a lump during a self-breast exam.
She just had a double mastectomy a few weeks ago.
"I discovered it myself and I just had that feeling something wasn't right. Just that gut instinct, so I went to the doctor and sure enough got the big C word, cancer," Durcho said.
Her breast cancer was at stage one. Her doctors said it could have been a lot worse had she not caught it when she did.
She said the display, which will be hoisted up with the help of the Steelers organization and displayed at Stage AE through October, means so much more to her today than it would have last year.
"To be here and kind of give back now that I'm feeling a little better is just awesome," Durcho said.
