Volunteers Help Spruce Up The DoorWay
AVALON (KDKA) -- From installing a new floor to painting the walls, volunteers donated their time at the DoorWay, located on California Avenue in Avalon.
"I just think it makes people feel better," Joyce Erdner, director of the DoorWay, said. "We want people to come here and feel that they're at home and in a safe, kind of friendly environment."
The DoorWay is an outreach program dedicated to helping kids and adults struggling with addiction. The facility offers everything from intervention to counseling and training.
There are also after school and prevention programs. It's been around for years, but cuts in funding have made keeping the doors open tough.
Maintaining its century-old building has been especially challenging, until now.
All of the work would have cost more than $7,000, but several businesses in the community like Lowe's, Home Depot and Young Brother's Flooring, stepped up to the plate and donated materials and time.
"I really think that it's going to make a difference because I can't tell you how many times I tripped on that carpet," Brandan Hart, a volunteer at the DoorWay, said.
