Vokoun To Miss 3-6 Months After Blood Clot Procedure
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's going to be a while before Penguins fans will get to see Tomas Vokoun back between the pipes.
Vokoun underwent a procedure to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis on Sept. 21. Today, the Penguins announced Vokoun will be out of action for 3 to 6 months.
He will be reevaluated after three months. At that time, it will be determined whether or not he can get back on the ice.
For now, Vokoun has been placed on long-term injured reserve and the Penguins plan on going into the season with Marc-Andre Fleury and Jeff Zatkoff as their goaltenders.
Vokoun helped lead the Penguins to the Eastern Conference Finals this past spring after Marc-Andre Fleury stumbled against the New York Islanders in the opening round.
Vokoun posted a 6-5 record with a 2.01 GAA and a .933 save percentage in the playoffs. During the regular season, Vokoun was 13-4 with a 2.45 GAA and a .919 save percentage.
If the spotlight on Fleury wasn't bright enough to start this season, it certainly is now with Vokoun out.
The Penguins open up the regular season tomorrow night at CONSOL Energy Center against the New Jersey Devils.
