Police Rescue 4 People From Violent Sheraden Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Four people suffered serious injuries in an early Thursday morning crash in Sheraden, but two police officers are being credited with potentially saving their lives.
According to police, the two-vehicle accident happened on West Carson Street near the Corliss Tunnel around 1:45 a.m.
One of the vehicles caught on fire after the crash with at least two people inside.
By chance, McKees Rocks Officer Michael Finnerty rolled up on the scene, but what he did next was nothing short of heroic.
"The vehicle was on fire and burning pretty badly. The driver, a young female, was wandering around the car, but there were two unconscious male passengers in the car. Officer Finnerty was able to pry the doors open and get both of those passengers out," McKees Rocks Police Chief Robert Cifrulak said.
With two people saved and two more in need of help, Officer Ryan Coll jumped in the other car and began pulling two unconscious males out.
All four were transported to local hospitals with significant injuries and one was seriously burned.
For the officers, this was not the first time they've pulled people from danger.
"These same officers have pulled people from burning homes. They've pulled people from other crashes. They routinely go above and beyond the call of duty and put themselves at risk," Chief Cifrulak said.
The crash remains under investigation and the names of the victims have not been released.
