Vice President Visits Pittsburgh, Speaks At Pitt
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Vice President Joe Biden is visiting the city today where he is talking to a crowd on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
The Vice President is discussing the economy, the American Jobs Act as well as the federal school loan assistance program.
His speech began at 11:45 a.m.
On Thursday, the Vice President talked with KDKA Radio's Larry Richert about a number of topics, including the steps the Obama Administration is taking to increase college affordability.
"When I'm going out to Pitt, I'm going to be talking about this help for college students. When my kids graduated from college they had giant debts," Vice President Biden said. "I, fortunately, had enough equity on my house, I literally - not a joke - sold my home, which was not a bad thing. It was a big home, they had all moved, and from the money I made on the home - when the home values were still good - I was able to help pay off their debts.
"People graduating now, there's polls out there saying middle class people are wondering whether it's worth the price," he added. "So, what the President announced was a new deal here. He said starting next year that every kid who graduates with a debt from college will never have to pay more than 10 percent of their disposable income."
The Vice President's visit comes a month after a visit from President Obama. He spoke to a crowd on the South Side in October.
Meanwhile, the Vice President's visit is also causing some road closures around the city.
There were closures this morning on the Parkway West inbound, 10th Street Bypass, 11th Street, Neville Street, Bayard Street, Lytton Street and Tennyson Street as the Vice President made his way to Oakland.
Drivers can expect the same closures between 1:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. as Biden leaves town.
Also, West Carson Street from Smithfield Street to Corliss will shut down around 3:15 p.m. through 4 p.m., and the outbound Parkway West will close around the same time.
