Verizon Bringing 4G Technology To Pittsburgh
Local internet technology experts gathered to hear firsthand about Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE, their latest in wireless technology.
Those with a wireless laptop or a new smart phone like a Blackberry or Android will soon be able to do everything a wired computer does and more.
"With a wireless modem providing faster 4G speed, laptops and later smart phones can video conference wirelessly," says Robert Moretti.
"You're sitting in the park. Somebody else is sitting on the job site and you're giving them instructions based on what you see," he said.
And 4G will eliminate the awkward gaps seen in satellite communications from far away places. It will also let you play interactive games with others on your smart phone.
"There won't be that latency, won't be that delay," Moretti said. "When you press the button to shoot, it will shoot before you get shot."
It also enables cars to provide many more applications on screens inside the vehicles.
"You can get communications, entertainment, you can do a YouTube," Grant Rose, with Alcatel Lucent, said.
If you're among the majority of Americans who doesn't own a laptop and couldn't care less about 4G, this technology could still be helpful. In fact, it could save your life.
Medical kiosks with 4G will be placed in malls, airports and other public places to let someone ill communicate visually with a real doctor.
"The world of possibilities is tremendous," Moretti said.
