Stolen SUV Crashes Into Downtown PNC Building

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are still looking for the man who crashed a stolen SUV into the front entrance of the PNC Firstside Center in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Witnesses say the driver stopped at a stop sign, but then proceeded to drive across the street onto a sidewalk, up some steps and into a revolving door.

Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Diane Richard says the SUV had been stolen from Parkway Center in Green Tree.

She describes the man who left the crash site as an African-American man, about 5'9", middle aged, with a brown jacket, green tossle cap, gray beard and thin wire glasses.

Witnesses say the driver was on a cellphone after the accident and that he walked into a nearby building as a guard chased him. The man got away, though.

Rick Weismantle and his wife were taking their kids home Tuesday evening. They had been at a child care center that is on the first floor of the building near the crash site.

Weismantle was frustrated that he wasn't able to get to them sooner, given that his wife told him the bomb squad had been called.

His wife was inside with the kids, who had been moved to a higher floor as a precaution.

The bomb squad inspected the contents of the SUV but found nothing explosive.

When asked if the crash could have been an accident or if it was deliberate, Richard said they simply don't know at this point.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.
