Woman Facing DUI Charges After Violent, Fiery Crash In Smith Twp.
SMITH TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - A woman is facing DUI charges after causing a fiery crash along Route 22 in Smith Township early Thursday morning.
According to police, Kasey Evans, 29, of Weirton, West Virginia, struck an abandoned car on the side of the road, under the Creek Road overpass around 2 a.m.
The abandoned vehicle flipped and both cars caught fire.
Langan Fruehan, a volunteer firefighter for seven years, pulled Evans out of her car.
"She was unresponsive, I pulled her out of the car or whatever onto the ground as the flames grew somewhat bigger," he said.
Fruehan said he was traveling home when he saw the crash and jumped into action.
"As I started getting closer and figure everything out, I parked my truck and when I got out of my truck I realized it was a pretty bad accident. One car was on fire, another car had the potential to be on fire," Fruehan said.
Fruehan said he went to the SUV that was already burning to rescue anyone who might have been inside.
"The smoke... it was crazy, so I ran to my truck to grab something I could try to beat out the window with, and when I went back, it was way too hot for me to stand there any longer than a few seconds, so I backed away from it. Even though I didn't want to, it was bothering me the whole time, and the other car was starting to go up and I knew if there was somebody in there, I had a better chance of saving who was in the other car," Fruehan said.
During the rescue, Fruehan burned his hand. He said he didn't consider that he could've been injured.
"None of that was really crossing my mind at the time because I know, I felt like, she needed get to get out of the car and I was the only one there," he said.
Evans was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police said Evans will be charged with driving under the influence.
