US Steel To Layoff Some Pittsburgh Employees
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - U.S. Steel Corp. is laying off an undisclosed number of Pittsburgh employees to cut costs.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker says in a Friday statement that there will be layoffs there and in other locations, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
U.S. Steel spokeswoman Courtney Boone says the layoffs involve employees in operations and business support functions. The company has about 5,000 employees in the Pittsburgh area and about 37,000 worldwide.
In January, President Barack Obama visited the U.S. Steel Irvin Plant in West Mifflin to talk about a new program called myRA to help workers save for the future.
The idea is to offer a "starter" account to let people begin saving even if they can't afford the large initial investment often needed for a private, commercial retirement account.
Before the stop in West Mifflin the president visited a Costco store in Maryland, where he discussed raising the minimum wage to $10.10.
