UPS Truck Crashes After Deer Jumps In Cab
GREENSBURG (KDKA) – The driver of a UPS tractor-trailer is luckily OK after a bizarre accident Wednesday morning.
The deer that caused the accident wasn't so lucky.
The deer was still in the cab of the truck that rolled on its side after police say a deer jumped from a hillside along East Pittsburgh Street and Route 30 around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
"I'm sure the last thing he expected was for a deer to propel itself through the windshield," State Police Trooper Steven Limani said.
But that's exactly what happened.
The deer did not immediately die – kicking and twitching in the cab, with 29-year-old Justin Kubecki of Greensburg trying to maneuver the rig.
"He had swerved his tractor-trailer back and forth along Route 30 and eventually went up a bank and overturned," Steven Limani said.
"Fortunately he did not strike any other vehicles," he said. "It looks like he is going to be OK. He was a little disoriented from the crash and ultimately life-flighted to a hospital in Pittsburgh."
Limani says the driver had only minor injuries and said the whole thing happened so fast he can't even recall the details.
"The deer subsequently died from the crash," Limani said. "And we're very lucky that no one else was hurt."
And State Police say to be mindful this time of year because it's mating and hunting season.
There's a lot more deer on the move and on the road. They also are reminding drivers that swerving to avoid hitting a deer can actually be more dangerous to themselves and other motorists.
