Upper St. Clair Police Make Headway In Missing Money Case
UPPER ST. CLAIR (KDKA) -- Police may be closer to finding out who took thousands of dollars that fell out of a bank courier van onto Route 19 in Upper St. Clair.
About $200,000 in loose bills flew through the air at about 1 p.m. Wednesday. Police think because the road is so busy, someone is sitting on information about who may have the money.
Just because you find money blowing down the highway doesn't mean you have the right to keep it.
"The window of opportunity continues to remain open for those that were there, those that took money, to return it," Upper St. Clair Police Lt. James Englert said. "That window remains open for some time yet."
The law calls it theft by failure to return lost more misnamed property.
Some people have returned $20, $40, $60 they picked up, but a large portion of the money is still unaccounted for.
Police say they now have a better idea of who may have it.
"Two young white males in their 20's – early to mid-20's – stopped on the side of the road and retrieved several bags that had fallen from the rear of the courier van," Englert said.
Police say the men may have been riding in a Dodge Dakota. They also have a partial plate number.
The longer they go without turning in the money, the greater the possibility they will be charged with theft, police say.
