Uniontown Robbery Suspect Arrested
UNIONTOWN (KDKA) – According to police, a man pretended to be an undercover officer and used that ruse to rob a couple at a Fayette County drug store Monday night.
Police said the man shot at the couple, as he followed their vehicle through Uniontown.
According to police, William Earl Smith was armed with a gun last night outside of Walgreens when he approached a man and woman just before midnight. He demanded that the man empty his wallet.
However, the cash, gift cards and medication weren't enough.
In the criminal complaint, police claim Smith threatened the couple, then approached the victims' car and began banging on it.
He allegedly began screaming that he was an undercover police officer and demanded to know where the drugs were.
Somehow, the couple was able to get into their vehicle and drive off.
However, while on the phone with 911, the victims noticed the suspect following them in a blue van and said Smith proceeded to pull out a gun and allegedly fired five shots.
The victims escaped unharmed by the gunfire.
When police heard the story, they had a good idea who might be behind the robbery and surrounded a home on Dunlap Street.
After a brief standoff, Smith came out of the home with his hands up and turned himself over.
The criminal complaint states that police did recover an unregistered firearm in the home.
Police also said the victims were able to positively identify Smith.
Smith is facing a list of charges including two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, making terroristic threats and robbery.
