Uniontown Fire Leaves 2 Families Homeless

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- A fire at an apartment house in Uniontown, Fayette County, left two families homeless.

Uniontown Fire Chief Chuck Coldren says the fire marshal has determined that a pot left on a stove started the fire. He says the family in that unit had left about 25 minutes before the fire was detected.

Five people, including two children, are left with no place to live. The chief says the Red Cross had been called to help them out.

Chief Coldren credited his firefighters with quick response time. He says that's the value of having a paid fire force, in addition to volunteers.

It was last year that a federal grant allowed the city to bring back half the fire department which had been laid off because of budget problems.

Coldren says with the paid force, they can get anywhere in Uniontown within three minutes.
