U.S. Releases 5 Tapes Of Bin Laden
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KDKA/AP) – The United States released five videos of Osama bin Laden that were seized from his compound in Pakistan.
One of the videos showed Bin Laden watching himself on television. His beard was unkempt and streaked in gray. He's sitting on the floor, wrapped in a brown blanket and holding a remote control.
Officials cannot say for certain that the video was shot at the compound in Pakistan, but they believe that to be the case.
The videos, released by U.S. intelligence officials Saturday, were offered as further proof that Navy SEALs killed the world's most wanted terrorist. However, they also served to show Bin Laden as vain and someone obsessed with his portrayal by the world's media.
In another video, he apparently dyed and neatly trimmed his beard for the filming of a propaganda video. The video, which the U.S. released without sound, was titled ""Message to the American People" and was believed to be filmed sometime last fall, a senior intelligence official said. The video appears to have been completed, but was never released by al Qaeda.
The evidence seized during the raid also includes phone numbers and documents that officials hope will help break the back of the organization behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Bin Laden was able to watch the news through a satellite dish that had been hooked up in the compound.
Officials believe that the compound in Pakistan was an active command and control facility for al Qaeda.
A team of NAVY SEALs, carried out the mission late Sunday evening. Bin Laden was killed along with four other people and was buried at sea.
