U.S. Open Resumes After Thursday's Rainout
OAKMONT (KDKA) -- Golfers are teeing off Friday morning to continue the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
They were originally scheduled to start the second round Friday morning, but instead, many golfers first have to start or finish the first round.
Heavy rains and storms delayed the tournament three times on Thursday, finally forcing officials to postpone the events for the day.
Only nine players finished the first round, and 78 players didn't even tee off.
It was the worst rain delay in a U.S. Open since no one finished the opening round at Bethpage Black in 2009 in a tournament that ended on a Monday.
Play resumed at 7:30 a.m. Friday and officials hope they can tee off on the second round at 1:45 p.m.
The bad news for fans who only had tickets to Thursday's events is that tickets cannot be exchanged for Friday or any other day during the tournament.
"You kind of hope you get your money's worth out of paying for the ticket so yeah it'd been a big disappointment not to get in today," Rick Deaner said.
All spectator gates and parking lots opened at 8 a.m. They were supposed to open at 6 a.m., but the course received 0.52 inches of rain after 9 p.m. Thursday, which made several passageways and parking lots impassable.
"I wasn't really worried about it. I figured they'd have everything cleaned up and ready to go and it looks like they are. No lines," Keith Doverspike said.
According to U.S. Open officials, the Red and Blue parking lots are operational with some capacity modifications. As a result, spectators are being urged to carpool.
