2 People Injured In Shooting Outside Homewood Laundromat
HOMEWOOD (KDKA)- Pittsburgh Police are looking into a shooting overnight outside of a laundromat in Homewood.
The shooting happened around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, in the 7100-block of Frankstown Avenue.
Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said police were alerted to the shooting by the ShotSpotter technology in Homewood.
The exact location of the sensors can't be revealed, but several of them picked up on gunfire and alerted police in enough time for them to catch a glimpse of a possible suspect and helped find two victims.
Due to the ShotSpotter, police responded to Frankstown Avenue in less than two minutes.
"It led our officers to the exact locations," Pittsburgh Police Spokesperson Sonya Toler said. "ShotSpotter is very accurate and very quick."
When they arrived, they found a 21-year-old man in the parking lot critically injured with a gunshot to the abdomen.
A 33-year-old man was shot in the arm while walking to his car.
"We showed up in enough time where we did see someone fleeing on foot. We don't know if that was one of the suspects or the suspect. We weren't able to apprehend him," Toler said.
While police could not catch that possible suspect, they did learn other valuable information they may not have known otherwise.
"In this situation, it let us know that there were four different locations where shots were fired," Toler said.
Initial testing of ShotSpotter started in December. Other cities that have used it say it allows them to respond to shots fired sometimes in under a minute.
"We're still learning. We're still tweaking and so far, we can see a very good benefit that ShotSpotter will have," Toler said.
Police have some details and a partial description as they continue to look for the man they saw running from the scene.
Three vehicles were also damaged in the gunfire early this morning.
