Two Carnegie Mellon Graduates Win Tony Awards
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Fox Chapel native won the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a play and gave a shout out to his home town.
"I wouldn't be here without my incredible teachers in Pittsburgh and my dear friends," Christian Borle of "Peter and the Starcatcher" said.
Some of those teachers he referred to are still turning out winners, including a pair of professors at Carnegie Mellon University.
"I have this plate and (my students) all signed it. And there you can see Christian Borle's name right in the center," Anthony McKay said.
The plate is now broken, but memories of a star pupil who graduated 17 years ago remain intact for acting teachers Anthony McKay and Gary Kline of the musical theater department.
Borle performed often at CMU's Kresge Theater.
"I taught him singing all of those four years and watched him steadily progress, get better at his craft (and) become a real singer," Kline said.
"He was one of the most imaginative students who ever came through CMU," McKay said. "(He was) a very creative actor."
Another Tony Award winner attended CMU at about the same time as Borle: Judith Light.
