TSA: Gun Found In Carry-On Bag At Pittsburgh International Airport
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – TSA officials at Pittsburgh International Airport investigated an incident involving a firearm being found in a carry-on bag Sunday morning.
According to a TSA official, the .380-caliber Smith & Wesson was found in the carry-on bag of a 35-year-old man.
"As he was going through the airport checkpoint, with the X-ray machines, the TSA employee noticed that he had an object in his back that he thought was a revolver," said Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt.
The man, whose name has not been released, was on his way to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
TSA notified local law enforcement and the man was later cleared to travel.
Although the man was later cleared, he may be subject to some stiff fines. Most penalties are in the $1,500 to $3,000 range.
First time offenders with an unloaded firearm face lower fines. But if there's a round in the chamber and you've been caught more than once, you could bay as much as $11,000.
So far this year, more than 1,000 weapons have been netted by federal TSA scanners at airports across the country.
"It's been our experience that they all say they didn't realize they had it," said Moffatt.
Officials said this is the sixth time this year a weapon has been found in carry-on luggage at the airport.
