3 Trains Derail After Major Collision Along Georges Station Road In Hempfield Township
HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Three trains derailed after a collision along Georges Station Road in Hempfield Township.
According to authorities, the derailments happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. in Luxor on Friday.
Eleven cars and 40 shipping containers derailed and a hazmat incident was declared. Officials said hazmat was called as a precaution.
A Norfolk Southern mixed-freight train transporting crude oil headed from Altoona to Conway collided with the back of a Northfolk Southern intermodal train, officials said.
Two locomotives pulling the crude oil cars fell off the train track but remained upright. Three cars transporting 18 shipping containers then derailed off the intermodal train, officials said.
The intermodal train was also struck by some of the equipment that derailed, causing the derailment of eight rail cars that were transporting 32 containers on an eastbound train.

The derailment is blocking train traffic on both tracks, and work is being done to clear the track.
"Norfolk Southern is on-site, performing and investigation on what happened and really going for cleanup," Hempfield Township manager Jason Winters said.

Winters said most of the train cars were empty.
Officials said the track is a throughway for Amtrack, which said a train headed toward Pittsburgh had to stop in Altoona.
Amtrack also said it has not made any decision for Saturday's services.
There were no injuries.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
