Woman Escapes Car Moments Before Train Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A driver managed to escape her car moments before it was hit by a train this morning in McKeesport.
Police say the woman driving the car wound up in a bad situation when she made a wrong turn down the railroad tracks.
Police say the 65-year-old Penn Hills driver had just dropped her son off at work in McKeesport when she crossed over the tracks. It was dark, and raining, so she didn't realize she hadn't crossed the tracks all the way, and she turned and got hung up on the tracks.
She stayed in the car, and told 9-1-1 what happened and she heard train horns. Knowing what was coming, the 9-1-1 operators told her to get out of the car.
Seconds later her Volkswagen was lodged under the train.
Craig Henderson witnessed the crash. "Lucky god was with her. She wasn't hurt, she got up and walked away."
Police say the driver didn't run the gates, the signals hadn't been activated. They say alcohol wasn't involved, and they are continuing their investigation.
