2 Dead After Rt. 70 Accident, Driver Charged
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two people are dead following an accident on Route 70 in Washington County.
The accident happened just after noon Saturday on the eastbound side of the road near the Route 70 and Interstate 79 split in Strabane Township.
The Washington County Coroner says the accident involved a tractor-trailer and two cars.
The tractor-trailer was traveling westbound when it crossed the median and struck a car traveling eastbound. The collision drove the car into the guardrail and over an embankment, according to the coroner.
Both the driver of the car and the passenger were killed.
They have been identified as 21-year-old Kaitlin Babka and 57-year-old Karen Babka, both of Hughesville, Md.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 44-year-old Yevgeniy Bugreyev, is being charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle. He is being held in the Washington County Correctional Facility on $1 million straight bond.
A third car was also involved in the accident.
Other people involved in the accident were transported to hospitals via ambulance and helicopter, the coroner said.
After the accident, both eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 70 were reportedly backed up near the split.
Eastbound Route 70 was closed while police investigated the crash.
