Town Crier Admits: "I Was Not Invited"
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -- Town crier and gate crasher, Tony Appleton, is the man who announced to the world that the royals had a baby boy.
But he admitted to KDKA Radio's Larry Richert and John Shumway of the KDKA Morning News that he wasn't invited to make the announcement.
"I've done it all on my own; nobody bothered me because they thought I was from the palace," said Appleton.
Tony tells Larry and John that he actually used to work at Caesars Palace TGI Friday's in Las Vegas as a toastmaster.
Appleton says he's "gate crashing" Buckingham Palace for years. The last time, during the Royal Wedding, and he's also been there for the London Olympics closing ceremony rehearsals.
"I can shout six-hours without losing my voice," Appleton said.
After he made the royal announcement about the birth, members of the media actually asked him to do it again, this time from the steps.
"I do a plan, like a military operation. I got someone to write a script for me," Appleton said.
Appleton said he got out of his taxi, with the scroll, and did the announcement.
"Somebody is going to get their ear bent today when they find out I wasn't invited," Appleton added.
