Tomlin: Steelers 'Coached Poorly' In San Diego Shocker

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- It happens quite often in the NFL, but it's hard for a team under the Steelers' evolving circumstances to justify an incredibly lackluster performance one week after an incredibly gutsy one. Head coach Mike Tomlin, however, tried his best.

"We coached poorly today, we played poorly today, which is unfortunate, given the opportunity that was in front of us, but it is what it is," Tomlin said after a 34-24 shocker at the hands of the fledgling San Diego Chargers. "We don't seek comfort. We accept responsibility for it. Regardless of what happened in other stadiums, if we play the way we played today, it does not matter."

Perhaps the only piece of good news to emerge, other AFC North results not withstanding, was that, according to Tomlin, Ben Roethlisberger made it through his return game no worse for the wear.

"I didn't have any problem with his ability to throw the ball--vertically, horizontally, or any of those things today," he said. "We just didn't perform well collectively."

Tomlin also gave his own explanation for why he didn't go for two following the Steelers' first or second touchdowns, which has become a topic of debate:
