Tomlin Goes 'Extra Mile' For Local Youth
PITTSBURGH (KDKA)--Mike Tomlin co-hosted the Extra Mile Education Foundation golf tournament at the Club at Nevillewood.
More than 140 golfers made it possible to raise $100,000. About $700,000 has been raised in 14 years since the tournament began.
Tomlin has been involved with the tournament the last five years and loves it.
"I think anytime you sit down and visit with the Extra Mile children or alumni, you get a sense of what it's about," Tomlin said. "All it is, is education alternative for maybe kids that aren't necessarily fall into the category where they can provide it to themselves. It provides affordable, private Catholic education for inner city or urban youth, and as a member of this community, man that's what drives us all, to make it a better place to live, and if you provide opportunities for young people we all benefit."
In addition to the golf tournament, KDKA's Bob Pompeani spoke with Tomlin about football as well, including former Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress' release from prison today after spending 20 months behind bars for illegally carrying and then accidentally firing a gun at a Manhattan nightclub.
Tomlin believes Burress will be good in his return to the NFL.
Pompeani asked Tomlin if he would consider giving Burress a chance to play in Pittsburgh.
"Why wouldn't ya? We're interested in competing and acquiring talent," Tomlin said to Pompeani. "As a principal we don't talk about potential free agents and things of that nature, but you can't deny the talent level in that young man."
