Company To Bring Cruising Tiki Bar Boats To Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- When you think cruising on the three rivers, you probably think of the traditional motor boats, sometimes tied together for special events, but how about a tiki bar boat?

"I saw a video of a cruising tiki boat from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and I said to her [my fiancé] as the fire was raging and the snow was coming down, we have to do this," recalled Dale McCue. "This would be a perfect fit for Pittsburgh."

Cruising tiki boats on the three rivers is the idea of McCue and his fiancé, both avid Pittsburgh boaters.

It's a franchise popular in Florida and the Bahamas, but Pittsburgh?

Down in the Florida Keys, McCue skyped with KDKA money editor Jon Delano on Tuesday.

"We took a ride on the boat. I got to drive the boat. I got to see how well made it was, how safe it was, and from there I was sold," said McCue.

Each boat holds six passengers and a captain licensed by the Coast Guard.

"We'd like to offer two-hour sightseeing charters on the three rivers," McCue says.

The cost?

Around $400 for six, or about $67 per person, if smaller groups book.

"We plan on picking up somewhere in the North Shore area, heading up the Allegheny past some iconic landmarks -- PNC Park, Convention Center -- come back down, make that turn around The Point around Pittsburgh, head up towards Station Square, cross back down, go towards the Ohio River," outlined McCue.

McCue was asked about the boats, which do not have railings in the warm waters of the South.

"Our boats are going to have railings on them. So our boats will have safety railings on them," he said.

As for beverages, it's BYOB – bring your own bottle.

"We don't want to promote this as a booze cruise. We are very family oriented," said McCue. "But if you want to bring a six-pack or you want to bring your favorite beverages and favorite snacks, then we encourage that and welcome that."

But no restrooms, so plan accordingly.

Cruisin' Tikis Pittsburgh hopes to be open for business by Memorial Day.
