Thrift Store Burglar Caught On Surveillance Camera
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are asking for help from the public to identify the man who burglarized a thrift center in Westwood.
The alleged burglar is described as being caught picture perfect on a security camera at the Community Thrift Center on Noblestown Road Monday just before 11 p.m.
"The guy used a dumpster for leverage and kicked in an air conditioner, broke in through our lunchroom," a Community Thrift Center employee said..
After failing to open a safe, he left in the parking lot. The man is seen on surveillance wandering through the store.
"Just bent this and pulled on it real good. This was our sterling case," says Cynthia White, the store manager.
More than 500 pieces of jewelry are gone, and he didn't stop filling his backpack.
"DVDs, jewelry and electronics, anything that basically he could fence or pawn," said employees.
Filing cabinets and a desk were ransacked, even a roll of stamps was taken.
The Community Thrift Center is part of the AMVETS National Service Foundation supporting a variety of programs for veterans and their families.
Repairing and replacing the damage and loss will cost about $5,000.
"They're not just taking from a local business," said employees, "they're taking from their community, and they're also taking directly from the American Veterans Charities."
Thrift shopper, Diane Boykin, was saddened by the theft.
"I think it's horrible," she said. "I think that's really a low person."
Last December, another thrift store on Babcock Boulevard was burglarized twice.
City detectives were at the Westwood scene Thursday morning collecting evidence.
"I think what he didn't realize is that we've got a clear shot of his face," said employees. "That picture's being distributed amongst thousands of Facebook users, Twitter, Tumblr."
A reward is being offered.
