Three-Alarm Fire Rips Through 2 Homes In Homewood

HOMEWOOD (KDKA)- Flames from a raging fire on Idlewild Street in Homewood lit up the early morning sky.

A vacant house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived just after 1 a.m.

Those flames quickly spread to the house next door where 78-year-old Everlean Washington lives.

"The fire alarm went off, she said she opened the window to get some air because the house was smoky. People were banging on the door telling her that her house was on fire. She knew that, got herself down the steps and the fire was right by the steps," Washington's daughter, Marsha Chambers, said.

When firefighters arrived, they said Washington was standing on her front porch. She was taken to West Penn Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

"She's doing good, they're putting her under observation," Chambers said.

Several 911 calls were made about the fire. It took firefighters more than an hour to get the three-alarm fire under control.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
