Thousands Pack Downtown For First Night Celebration

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - New Year's Eve has come and gone, but the memories of the First Night celebration are very much alive in the minds of the thousands who packed Pittsburgh Monday night.

"It's my favorite part of the year. It's really fun, and it's our second year of coming and we love all the activities and like the walking around and seeing Pittsburgh," Lauren Haffner said.

A grand parade wound its way through downtown and featured gigantic puppets.

Thousands lined the streets to watch in anticipation of what would be coming next.

Some had been to First Night celebrations before, but for others, it was their first visit.

"I'm really surprised. I've never been here on New Year's Eve. I love it. It's really interesting," Breanna Dean said.

"We are ready for it next year. We are coming back for sure," Amy Dean said.

There was so much to do for the kids with the added bonus of moving inside to warm up a bit.

There were many ways to keep warm while out in the cold as well. All the hot music around town kept people dancing in the streets.

From hand puppets, to parrots, to ice skating at PPG Place, Pittsburgh was the place to be.

"It's so unique. The creative side of Pittsburgh is obvious and it's beautiful," Colleen Stearns said.
