Thousands Of Dollars In Pills Taken At Uniontown Pharmacy
UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- Police in Fayette County are investigating after roughly 41,000 oxycodone pills with a street value of $100,000 were taken from a pharmacy in Uniontown overnight.
The robbery happened around 1:15 a.m. at the 24-hour Walgreens on West Main Street.
A man called the pharmacy saying he was in the store with a gun and wanted oxycodone. However, investigators say he wasn't actually in the store.
"The suspect was outside watching the pharmacist as the pharmacist was working, moving some items inside the store," said Detective Donald Gmitter, of Uniontown Police. "He called and told the pharmacist actually what he was doing, at which point he order the pharmacist to get the pills, stated that he did have a gun. The pharmacist then went to the shelf and got the pills for the suspect and handed them out through the drive-thru window."
Police say the suspect was on foot when he picked up the drugs at the drive-thru. They are reviewing surveillance tapes, but for now are only describing the suspect as a tall, thin man.
No one was hurt in the robbery.
According to police, the biggest concern is the large number of prescription painkillers that could now be on the streets of Uniontown.
"These are a strong painkiller, and in the hands of the wrong people, could be devastating," said Detective Gmitter.
Uniontown police are currently looking to see if this could be related to a similar robbery that happened earlier Thursday evening in Moon Township.
