Thousands Hold Rally To Support PSU Football Team
STATE COLLEGE (KDKA) – There was a strong showing of support at Penn State University Tuesday morning as hundreds of people gathered on campus to welcome and cheer on the football team as it embarks on a new season.
It was an early morning for the pep band and more than a thousand Penn State fans.
Dressed in blue and white, waving signs and shouting, they stormed the campus to support the current football team and the players who have decided to stay Nittany Lions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal.
"When we heard they were going to rally together, it's just where we needed to be," Carey Fisher said.
Players will head into training camp next week and they say this rally really got them back on track. They are looking forward to the future and all the action that will happen out on the field.
"It definitely makes you more focused on why you are here and why you play the game. You play for your families, you play for these fans, and you play for the coaches and they are going to have your backs no matter what happens and that was proof of it today and the guys that are deciding to leave or don't know what they are doing, if this wasn't enough for them to stay I don't know what will be," quarterback Matt McGloin said.
Even some former players showed up to take part.
"What other place in the world are you going to have thousands of people waking up at 6 a.m. to come watch you work out? What other place are you going to have 108,000 people cheering for you every week? And what other place in the world are you going to have over a half-million alumni looking to help you out when you get out of here? Look at me, like I said, I only played in five games and the support I've gotten has been second to none," Adam Taliaferro said.
