Thousands Attend Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade
LAWRENCEVILLE (KDKA) –While many people were preparing for cookouts at the end of a long weekend, the true meaning of Memorial Day is to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.
In Lawrenceville, thousands attended the 105th Memorial Day Parade -- one of the oldest in the nation. This year's parade featured music, motorcycles, military machines and of course, the veterans.
KDKA-TV's Ross Guidotti asked some spectators what their favorite part of the parade was this year.
"The guns and the military men," Chris Budzinski said.
"I would like to say the veterans that marched in the parade as well as the firemen," Leslie Zielinski said.
The Bomb Squad and SWAT Teams participated as well.
Those in attendance along the parade route were there to memorialize what this day is truly about. It's not about parades and cookouts, though many choose to celebrate in that fashion.
The day is actually about the countless men and women that have died in the service of our nation.
"It's a chance to say thank you to those who gave their lives and who weren't able to come back," veteran Jim O'Brian said. "To say thank you for that."
Over the years, 1.5 million Americans have given their lives in the line of duty.
