This Week In Panthers Athletics
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - With the "Backyard Brawl," both the men's and women's basketball teams and the wrestling team in action, it's going to be an exciting week for Pitt Panthers athletics.
Here's what you need to know about all the matchups from the Pittsburgh Athletic Media Relations Office:
FOOTBALL
One of the nation's longest running rivalries, Pitt hosts West Virginia for the 103rd time in the "Backyard Brawl" at Heinz Field on Friday, Nov. 26, at noon. With 102 prior encounters, West Virginia is the Panthers' most-played opponent. The 2010 Backyard Brawl has major Big East title implications. The Panthers can secure at least a share of the league championship and eliminate West Virginia's title hopes with a victory.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The No. 5 ranked Pitt basketball team hosts Robert Morris on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center. The matchup will be produced by ESPN Regional and broadcast locally on FSN Pittsburgh.
Pitt will then host Penn on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. That contest will available on the internet on ESPN3.com. Pitt won the 2K Sports Classic/Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament title after consecutive wins over Maryland (79-70) and Texas (68-66).
Big East Player of the Week, Ashton Gibbs was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Travon Woodall earned all-tournament honors. Pitt opens its season with a 5-0 record for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Panthers host two games at the Petersen Events Center this week.
First, Pitt faces No. 6 Duke on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m.After the holiday, the Panthers meet Loyola (Md.) in a 2 p.m. contest on Sunday, Nov. 28.
Both games are available on Pitt Panthers Television on the Comcast Network. Pitt posted a 77-46 victory over Radford at home on Sunday behind the second double-double of the season from senior Chelsea Cole. Cole pumped in 19 points and added 10 rebounds to help Pitt improve to 2-1 on the season.
WRESTLING
The No. 20 ranked Pitt wrestling team will travel to Albany, N.Y. to compete in the Journeyman Northeast Duals on Saturday, Nov. 27.
The Panthers will wrestle in three matches, starting with Penn at 9 a.m., followed by Virginia (2:30 p.m.) and American (4:15 p.m.). The team is coming off a strong performance at the Buckeye Duals in which they defeated two top-15 teams, Nebraska and Ohio State.
