Thieves Steal Local Bridge
NORTH BEAVER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- State police in New Castle are investigating the theft of an old steel bridge in a wooded area near the Pennsylvania Turnpike in North Beaver Township.
The bridge was 50-feet long and 20-feet wide and spanned a small creek which flows into the Mahoning River.
The burglars went to great lengths to dismantle the bridge with a blow torch and remove it. Investigators believe the bridge was cut up at the scene. They also found tire tracks in the mud.
It was located in a rural area and not many houses are around. The bridge was made of corrugated steel with a steel web deck and steel I-beam supports.
The bridge is valued at $100,000 and was possibly sold for scrap metal. Police think the theft happened within the past 10 days.
Gene Frank, who lives nearby, says it doesn't surprise him because thieves will do anything for money.
