Theodora Polamalu: Polynesian Luau 'A Celebration Of Charity'
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Troy Polamalu has been out of the line-up since he was injured in the Steeler game Nov. 2, but he's not going to miss the luau this Friday night to support his foundation.
KDKA's Kristine Sorensen talked with Troy's wife, Theodora, and while she's not able to discuss his injury or when he'll be back, she is open about the expansion of their charity and their two growing boys.
Theodora says she and Troy would go to luaus when they visited his home in American Samoa, and they're bringing in authentic hula dancers for the Polamalu's Polynesian Luau charity event.
It's going to be held this Friday night at the Westin Convention Center.
"It's a celebration of charity," Theodora said, "but it's also celebration of Troy's culture and it's a good night for everybody."
The highlight of the event is a fire knife dance.
Theodora says Troy has his own fire knives and practices in their garage, but he's sticking to football when it comes to how he helps the charity.
He and Theodora created a football camp in American Samoa and added volleyball for girls and an academic program, too.
"We're trying to reform all the schools there and upgrade their education systems, giving them the opportunity and the tools for these children to be able to go away from American Samoa to educate themselves, and then go back and give to that island community," Theodora said.
The Polamalus are teaching their own children about charity. Their boys are now ages 4 and 6. She says that while they're athletic, they're not into sports.
"My kids don't watch sports. I hate to say that my husband's trying to get them to watch soccer more. They do play soccer and he's really pushing soccer on them. He is obsessed with soccer. Troy watches soccer the minute he gets done watching his films and everything, and the little time before dinner he's watching," she said.
Theodora brings the boys to all Steeler home games to see their dad play, but to them, it's just their dad's job.
"Even if I say your dad's up there on the field, they would just rather be on the iPad and just sort of do their own thing. They don't really have an interest yet," she said.
