Cassie Blake (Britt Robertson, "Life Unexpected") is a normal, happy teenager, leading an everyday life with her devoted single mom, Amelia. But when her mother dies in what Cassie thinks is a tragic, accidental fire, her world is turned upside down.
Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane (Ashley Crow, "Heroes") in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington – where the residents seem to know more about her than she knows about herself.
Because of her mother's past with this community and her father's mysterious death, Cassie is unsure of her place, but at school she is soon befriended by Diana Meade (Shelley Hennig, "Days of Our Lives"), a sweet-natured classmate who takes Cassie under her wing. Cassie is eager to have someone show her the ropes, especially since the school's resident meangirl, Faye (Phoebe Tonkin, "H2O: Just Add Water"), her sidekick Melissa (Jessica Parker Kennedy, "50/50," "Smallville"), and loner Nick (Louis Hunter, "Out of the Blue") seem unusually interested in getting to know her. But her most powerful connection is with Adam (Thomas Dekker, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"), in spite of the fact that he is Diana's boyfriend. Cassie is also surprised to discover that Adam's father, Ethan (Adam Harrington, "Dexter"), had long been in love with her mother, and that Amelia's departure from Chance Harbor all those years ago drove Ethan to despair and drinking. Soon, Cassie learns that her mother had tried to leave behind dark secrets in Chance Harbor. As Cassie gets to know her new high school classmates, strange and dangerous things begin to happen, and her new friends seem to be a part of all of it. Finally, the group explains that they are all descended from powerful witches, and they've been waiting for Cassie to join them and complete a new generation of the Secret Circle. Cassie refuses to believe them – until Adam shows her how to unlock her incredible magical powers. But it's not until Cassie finds a message from her mother in a hidden, leather-bound book of spells that she understands her true and dangerous destiny. Cassie is not only a witch, but she is the key to binding the Circle together. Each member of the Circle has lost one or both of their parents in the same mysterious accident. And now that the Circle is together again, they have stronger powers than they realize, ones that could again spiral out of control. What Cassie and the others don't yet know is that darker forces are at play.
The Circle has not been drawn together again by chance – Diana's father, Charles Meade (Gale Harold, "Queer as Folk," "Desperate Housewives") and Faye's mother, Dawn (Natasha Henstridge, "Species"), the high school principal, have deadly powers that they plan to unleash, and ulterior motives for uniting the new generation. But why have they brought the Circle together? And who will be at risk as their sinister plan takes shape?
