PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - The Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner has become a KDKA tradition. Every Christmas Eve, Rob Pratte visits Kuhn's Market on McKnight Road and broadcasts a Christmas Special filled with food and guests.
The Italian-American tradition of the seven fishes goes back decades, it is unknown when the phrase became popularized. But the seven fishes celebration began by the Roman Catholics as a way to refrain them from eating meat or milk products on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Catholics would instead eat fish, typically fried in oil.
Many of the traditional Italian meals include baked cod, baccalà (salted cod), fried smelts, shrimp and linguine with anchovy, clam, lobster, tuna, or crab sauce. In Pittsburgh, many seafood lovers flock to places like Wholey's Fish Market in the Strip and Kuhn's Market.
This year for the Seven Fishes broadcast, Rob Pratte was joined by many local-celebrities. Guests like Gov. Tom Corbett and Bishop David Zubik sent their holiday wishes this season. The audience was entertained by the musical talents of Vanessa Campagna and Lara Cottrill.
