Teenager Hospitalized After Being Hit By Car In Lawrence Co.
ELLPORT (KDKA) - A teenager was flown to Children's Hospital after being hit by a car in Lawrence County Friday morning.
Ellwood City police say the 17-year-old was crossing Portersville Road to board a school bus when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle and then slammed into the windshield before hitting the ground.
"As kids were getting on the bus, I saw him walking across and I just saw him get hit by the car," said one of the students on the bus. "I ran over and made sure he was ok."
"A student was clipped, did fly out of his tennis shoes and up over the vehicle and landed on the road," said Chief Mark Romutis, of Ellwood City Police.
The teen is a student at Lincoln High School.
He was flown by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital. He's reportedly in fair condition with a concussion but no broken bones.
"Our sympathy goes to the family, and also, we're hoping that the student has a speedy recovery," said Lincoln School Superintendent Frank Aloi.
Police say the school bus was stopped with its yellow lights flashing.
Authorities say they believe the driver, an 86-year-old woman from Ellwood City, was trying to pass the bus instead of slowing down and waiting for the buses red lights, which require drivers to stop.
"Some witnesses have told us that it looked like the vehicle did speed up as it was approaching the school bus, but once the collision occurred the woman did stop immediately," said Chief Romutis.
Police say they are still investigating and charges will likely be filed against the driver.
